OC Kickboxing and MMA’s Kid’s Competition Team made the drive to Las Vegas Nevada, to try their hand at the Pankration Open Tournament held at Xtreme Couture. A total of eleven kids competed that day. Seven of them went home with medals!

The kids that did not win medals all had excellent fights and gained a great deal of experience. Some highlights were young Alex Gonzales winning gold after an amazing display of his clinch, ultimately winning via arm bar in the final round.

Other notables include Jonavan “Sumo” Asuncion winning two fights by taking down his opponents, mounting them, hitting and finishing by arm bar in both cases. Sumo took home a silver medal. Travis Duncan also took home silver. Travis had a dog fight in the first round that ended in a loss, but fought his way back to a rematch against the same opponent for second place later in the day. Within thirty seconds Travis won by rear choke.

The event was a big success and we look forward to July 16, were most of these kids will be competing in the Kids World Championship BJJ tournament.

Urijah Faber and Mike Frison

May 6th-8th 2011

Last week OC Kickboxing’s fight coach Mike Frison and assistant fight coach Carlos Luevano took a trip to Sacramento to train with former WEC feather weight champ, and UFC number one contender Urijah Faber and the whole Alpha Male squad.

The training was as dynamic and intense as the all of the famous Alpha Male fighters.

The first night was a submission wrestling tutorial with Team Alpha Male ground work specialist Dustin Akbari, the instruction was greatly detailed around the open guard, as well as leg lock finishes. This particular training session finished with some rolling time for both OCKB coaches with bantam weight top contender Joseph Benavides along with Urijah Faber himself.

Day two was a highly eclectic striking clinic with Justin Buccholz as well as Alpha Male Muay Thai coach Master Thong, after training both OCKB coaches attended a BBQ at Urijah’s house to watch the Pacquiao vs. Mosley fight.

Day three was a full MMA mixture taught by Urijah, mixing in all aspects of the MMA game, but focusing on ground and pound. All of the members of Team Alpha Male were excellent, down to earth coaches.

A big thank you, to all of the Alpha Male members, Dave Rowen and of course “The California Kid” himself, Urijah Faber.

Best of luck to Urijah,
as he goes for the UFC bantam weight title
on July 2nd against Dominick Cruz.
